Sadness

I lost a dear friend this weekend.

Fred was one of the kindest, gentlest men that I had the privilege to know. Family was always first for him. I never saw him mad or upset, even when things went wrong. He would just shrug his shoulders and fix whatever needed to be fixed.

Fred and Cathy didn’t discipline their kids as most parents did. A broken window, or messy rooms, or crashing the car into the house all got the same level of conversation. Because they believed that even though you taught your children right from wrong, that sometimes things just happened, despite all of the best precautions. Their favorite saying: “shit happens”.

His favorite food was fast food hamburgers. He loved them, would rather eat them than the delicious dinner that Cathy cooked. He loved football, High School, College and NFL., he watched it all. His four boys all played baseball so he got involved by being an umpire. Cathy refused to watch baseball with him after that, because he would get so mad at the umpire’s “bad decisions”.

Fred worked a lot of different jobs in his life. His last job was pest control along with doing restaurant inspections for the state. You would think that seeing restaurant kitchens would stop him from eating fast food, but it didn’t. He did however, refuse to ever eat at a chinese restaurant.

I lost a dear friend this weekend and the world is a sadder place.

Shellie, I’ve been trying to get back over here all day long. I’m so, so sorry to hear about your friend. It’s not only horrible to lose a friend, it’s wrenching to watch his family grieve. My thoughts and prayers have been with you all day.

  5. My deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and his family.

  6. I’m so sorry for you. A few years back where I lost 8 friends in a 3 year period. I had a weird existential crisis. The only thing I’ve ever been able to figure out to say about things like this is at least you got to know this person in real life. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

    Shellie,

I am so very sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to both you and Fred’s family. I have lost friends and family, as I am sure everyone commenting on this post has. So we know how you are feeling. You wrote a very moving piece, which I know he would have been proud.

Shame the advert on the right hand side was of a freaking spider!!!! I nearly jumped out of my skin 🙂

  8. So sorry to hear of the loss of your friend Shellie, but what a nice tribute you have written to him…thanks for sharing it.
